Botanicals are insect toxins that are derived or extracted from plants or plant parts. Many botanical insecticides have been known and used for hundreds of years, but were displaced from the marketplace by synthetic insecticides in the 1950s. These old products, and some new, plant-derived products, deserve consideration for use in pest control. Botanical insecticides have different chemical structures and modes of action.

Use of plant extracts and powdered plant parts as insecticides goes back at least as far as the Roman Empire. For instance, there are reports that in 400 B.C. during Persian king Xerxes' reign, the delousing procedure for children was with a powder obtained from the dry flowers of a plant known as pyrethrum (Tanacetum cinerariaefolium, Compositae). The first botanical insecticide, used as such, dates back to the XVII Century when it was shown that nicotine, obtained from tobacco leaves, would kill plum beetles. At present time there are a number of botanical insecticides being marketed which are extracted from neem, grapefruit seeds, pungam, Sesame oil, Castor and garlic, among other plants. Besides, there are the synthetic copies of natural active ingredients like neonicotinoids where imidacloprid stands out. Lastly, it is worth mentioning that this is a field where new discoveries are made every day

Pungamia glabra commonly known as Karanj is native of western ghats in India. Seeds of this medium-sized glamorous tree is mainly valued for the oil obtained from them which has pesticide and medicinal uses.

Research has shown that the seed oil of Azadirachta indica (Neem) can control nearly 200 species of insects. It is significant that some of these pests are resistant to pesticides, or are inherently difficult to control with conventional pesticides (floral thrips, diamond back moth & several leaf miners). Thus Neem is a broad spectrum pesticide and even compatible with most chemical pesticides. Neem works by intervening at several stages of the life of an insect. It may not kill the pests instantaneously but incapacitate it in several other ways. Our agrineem formula is able to control more than 250 insect pests.
